Oprah’s Super Soul Podcast: Build the Life You Want Episode 1

Icebreaker

Print out Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (link here) with the question at the top of the paper “What is your level of satisfaction with each stage?

Prompts/Questions

Opening:

Start with Why (similar to how they did for the book, to lift people up and bring them together with science and ideas)

  • Prompt: What is your why? If you don’t know yet, hopefully this next quarter will illuminate that for you. A question to answer at the end of our season.

  • NST Why: to forge deeper connection with yourself and others through the art of meaningful conversation.

Happiness Slump
Problems in the climate and problems in the weather

  • Have you noticed or experienced a happiness slump? If you were to draw your happiness graph over the last few years, what would it look like?

  • Play clip: 7:07-8:46: The introduction of social media in 2009 (Twitter speak negatively, Instagram is a platform of comparison). Social media is the junk food of social life.

  • Happiness is _______

4 pillars of happiness:

  • Play clip 11:17-13:05

  • The “idols”- what we think brings us happiness: Money power pleasure fame (hedonic treadmill)

  • But really it’s: Faith, family, friends, work that serves others

  • Who has chased idols and how have you redirected towards the true north’s of happiness?

Nutrient needs vs. caloric needs

  • Macro nutrients: enjoyment (pleasure + people + memory), satisfaction, purpose

  • What provides you with superficial happiness and what provides you with deep nutritious happiness in your life?

  • Let’s make lists of both and discuss!

  • Do you have a balance or is one overvalued right now?

Metacognition: putting distance between your feelings and reactions and doing it on purpose.

  • 34 mins: Taking authority over your emotions

  • Emotions are just information, separate yourself from the thing you’re feeling

  • Miriam note (I’ll expand on this IRL): Writing something down brings it from limbic to pre-frontal cortex. It’s like affect labeling, naming the thing you’re feeling in the moment: “I’m nervous to give this talk…?”-- do you have any examples of having done that? What do you think?

  • Metacognative skill: studying yourself and observe the feeling

  • Let’s have everyone take a few mins to write 7 things they’re grateful for in their journal

Closing (at 11:45):

Purpose

  • The why of your life, the meaning

  • Your essence proceeds your image

  • 31:26 Why are you alive?

  • For what are you willing to die for today?
